Internal Medicine There will be times when your companion may not feel 100%, and it is our job to get them back on their feet! The cornerstone of internal medicine is the ability to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions including, but not limited to:
- gastrointestinal disease
- liver and kidney disease
- cardiovascular and
respiratory disease
- skin conditions and
allergies
- seizures and epilepsy
- endocrine disease
- lameness and other
muskuloskeletal diseases
At Bowman Animal Hospital we start with a comprehensive exam which may include diagnostic testing, EKG, fluid therapy, ultrasound, and digital radiographs. With the assistance of state-of-the-art equipment, our veterinarians are able to make accurate and timely diagnoses; this means that your pet can be on the road to recovery as quickly as possible. | View |
Radiology & Diagnostics We are proud to have a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory within our hospital. If your pet becomes ill, digital radiography allows us to obtain immediate radiographic results, leading to a quicker diagnosis and treatment plan for your pet. When needed, we also utilize the comprehensive diagnostic support of a nationally known veterinary laboratory, and in most cases will receive results within 24 hours. Our doctors have immediate access to this laboratory's numerous veterinary pathologists and specialists whenever they want to consult and/or get a second opinion.
When your pet needs x-rays, our digital radiography equipment guarantees the highest quality films in the shortest amount of time. Our doctors will be able to review these films with you on the computer screen in every exam room, and your pet's radiographs will be stored safely in our database so that they can be accessed at any time.
If your pet is referred to an emergency hospital, or to a specialist, digital imaging ensures that the referral veterinarian will have current radiographs in-hand when they meet your pet. We can easily provide you with a copy of your pet's films on a disc, or e-mail them directly to the specialist. | View |
Surgery/Laser Surgery Each of our doctors has had extensive surgical training in both routine and non-routine surgical procedures. Due to the advances in veterinary surgery and critical care, we utilize state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and employ trained technicians to ensure your pet's safety while under anesthesia.
We are fortunate to have a CO2 surgical laser, which can help reduce recovery time, swelling, and bleeding for your pet. The use of a surgical laser will also reduce your pet's post-operative pain.
Another specialty at our hospital is the surgical repair of a condition called Juvenile Pelvic Symphysiodesis (JPS). This diagnosis can be detected in puppies and kittens and will result in hip dysplasia as your pet ages. Through diagnosis and surgical repair, usually at the same time as the spay or neuter, JPS surgery is an excellent preventative for hip dysplasia associated with degenerative diseases. | View |
Dentistry & Digital Dental Radiography Maintaining
your pet's oral health is one of the most important thing you can do to
help them live longer, more pain-free lives. Poor oral hygiene can
lead to periodontal disease, tooth loss, and other serious health
problems, such as heart, liver, and kidney failure.
At Bowman Animal Hospital we have made a strong commitment to dental
health, and have recently built a suite solely dedicated to dentistry.
This suite boasts two fully equipped dental stations, as well as a
digital dental radiography unit. During a dentistry procedure, your
pet's teeth are scaled and polished, gingival pockets are measured, and
a set of full-mouth radiographs are taken to determine any root damage
or need for extractions. Our doctors will keep in touch during the
dental procedure, and will notify you if they find anything that needs
to be addressed while your pet is under anesthesia.
Every examination at our hospital includes a thorough dental
screening. The veterinarian and technician will grade your pet's teeth
and discuss a life-long treatment plan, which includes regular dental
cleanings. There have been major advances in veterinary dental
home-care products, and our team will help you develop a plan that best
suits you and your pet. | View |
Low Level Light Laser Therapy As
a cutting-edge veterinary hospital, we now offer Low Level
Light Laser Therapy. This healing modality has been used as a successful
treatment option for multiple conditions in human medicine for over thirty-five
years.
Low Light Lasers, also referred to as low level lasers or therapeutic lasers,
are energy healing lasers that operate in the visible and near infrared light
region at wavelengths from about 600 to 900 nanometers (nm). The laser is
able to penetrate deeply into the cells to stimulate healing without generating
heat. The result of this energy equals accelerated healing with minimal risk of
damage. Because the infrared wavelengths penetrate much deeper into the body
than visible light, these lasers may be used effectively on bones, cartilage,
and nerves.
Whether
long term or acute, therapeutic lasers stimulate healing and reduce pain from
injuries, lesions, and chronic conditions in our pets. Our doctors and staff are well trained in the use of this highly therapeutic laser; feel free to ask if this modality would be beneficial for your pet.

rehabilitation services of Gina Epifano, PT. Gina has collaborated
with veterinarians for over 7 years to provide care to pets recovering from
injury, surgery, or disease. She has lectured nationally on animal
rehabilitation and currently travels throughout the country providing services
to national level agility athletes.
Because Gina’s true passion is to increase the quality of life for geriatric
animals, her services are an excellent compliment to the care your pets receive
from our veterinarians. It is also her goal to teach owners how to
properly rehabilitate their pets at home to ease pain and increase mobility and
range of motion.
If you think that your best friend might benefit from Gina's services, ask one
of our veterinarians if a referral would be appropriate.

Complementary & Integrative Medicine | Integrative
medicine embraces many holistic therapies, with an emphasis on those having a
strong tradition of documented effects, careful research, and ongoing
study. It also embraces the many positive attributes of medical skills
that have been highly developed in Western medicine. Some of these
include superb emergency medicine and critical care skills, advanced dental and
surgical techniques, effective and safe medicines for infections, arthritis,
inflammation, and pain.
Simply put, integrative medicine offers the best tool, at
the best time, for the health condition that is presented. Integrative
medicine offers the best options for wellness-focused care, too. At
Bowman Animal Hospital, we would no more deprive you of the best that Western
medicine has to offer than we would neglect to tell you when acupuncture or
herbal supplements would be in your pet's best interest. It's that simple!

The Holistic Examination |
At
Bowman Animal Hospital our initial holistic exam integrates both Eastern and
Western veterinary medicine. The first part of the appointment will be
dedicated to getting your pet's full history, focusing on symptoms, evaluating
diet, and discussing behavior.
During
the second half of the appointment, a complete "nose to tail"
evaluation of your pet will be performed. If your pet has not had a full
blood profile and urinalysis within the past month, we will need to do that as
well. As part of the holistic evaluation, the veterinarian will
evaluate your pet's tongue, pulse, and acupuncture points. When the
results from both of these exams are combined, our doctor will have a
comprehensive look at your pet's current health.
Initial
holistic exams are scheduled for one hour, so be prepared to spend some time
with us. Don't ever hesitate to ask questions; we realize that a lot of
the medical terms and treatments discussed may be completely new to you.
It is important that you understand everything that the doctor discusses, and
are comfortable with any recommendations that she may make regarding your pet's
health care. To better assist you in preparation for your holistic exam, please click on our forms page so that you can complete the required documentation prior to your pet's visit. | View |
Veterinary Acupuncture At Bowman one of the most important ways we take an integrative approach to medicine is by utilizing the healing powers of acupuncture. In China this technique has been used on animals for over 3000 years. Currently veterinary acupuncture is utilized all over the world to treat a wide variety of maladies in every species of domestic and exotic animal.
According to ancient Chinese
medical philosophy, disease is the result of an imbalance of energy in the
body. Acupuncture is believed to balance this energy and thereby assist
the body to heal disease. In Western terms, acupuncture can assist the
body to heal itself by affecting certain physiological changes. For
example, acupuncture can stimulate nerves, increase blood circulation, relieve
muscle spasms, and cause the release of hormones such as endorphins and
cortisol. It is also successful in the treatment musculoskeletal, skin and
gastrointestinal problems. It has even been used successfully to treat
respiratory illness, such as feline asthma.
The Chinese also realized that acupuncture points communicate with one another
and internal body organs in specific ways. Similar to destinations along
a train track, these points are connected by meridians or channels. Each
meridian assumes the name after the internal organ with which it
communicates. By placing a needle or a bead (see below) in one point, we
affect a whole meridian. Disease is caused by a blockage along the
meridian, like snow along a train track, and the acupuncture frees up the
blockage.
When administered by a trained
veterinarian, acupuncture is one of the safest forms of medical treatment for
animals. The insertion of the needles is virtually painless, and most
animals become very relaxed and often sleepy after the needles are in
place. The length and frequency of the treatments depends on the
veterinarian's assessment of each individual patient's medical condition.

Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation |
Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM) is a
Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM) is a healing technology that locates
areas of the animal’s nervous system that have fallen out of alignment, and
re-establishes neuronal communication, which thus induces healing. VOM is
singularly the most simple, effective and safe healing modality in veterinary
care.
Is VOM
Chiropractic Care? No! VOM exists
between veterinary medicine and chiropractic care. It has similarities to
some of the chiropractic modalities in restoring function by reducing "subluxations" as is done in chiropractic care. VOM uses a hand-held
device that is used in a popular human chiropractic technique called "Activator
Methods", but the differences between VOM and chiropractic care (both human and
animal) are significant and distinct.
How does
it work? VOM delivers its force with a
hand-held device called a spinal accelerometer. VOM
finds and reduces all neuronal subluxations which have a pathological reflex
demonstrably associated with them. A pathological reflex is like a
knee-jerk response. It is either there or it is not; the pathological
read is not partially there, kind of there, or almost there. There
is no factor of subjectivity to interpretation, which is what makes VOM so
accurate. The technique goes to the root of the problem, relying on an
animal’s innate ability to heal itself.
How Many Treatments Does My Pet Need? The initial VOM series consists
of 3-5 readjustments every few weeks (actual time between appointments will be
determined by your veterinarian) in order to reach a consistent point where the
subluxation pattern is cured. After that time, maintenance checks are
recommended every few months based on your veterinarian’s discretion.

Nutritional Counseling Because
we love our pets unconditionally, we want to feed them a safe and balanced
diet. But how does one do this when being bombarded on a daily basis with
pet food recalls, as well as new foods hitting the market that are often making
confusing, and/or unfounded claims about their ingredients?
The
doctors and staff at Bowman Animal Hospital are here to help you evaluate the
information and products being disseminated in the media and on the
Internet. It is our duty to build a partnership with our clients and to
guide them in creating an individualized diet plan for their pets.
Whether you want to feed a commercial diet or pepare cooked meals, it is our
responsibility to help you make the most educated and fact-based decisions
regarding your pet's nutrition.
Our nine doctors have worked as a team to come up with nutritionally balanced
meal options for your pets. Diet requirements may differ for older, sick,
and overweight pets, so they have evaluated veterinary prescription diets and
recipe options to treat a variety of medical conditions and diseases, from food
allergies to diabetes. Please let u
s know if you are interested in scheduling a
nutritional consult for your pet with one of our veterinarians. We welcome
questions regarding your current pet food and/or other diets you are
considering.

Herbal & Homeopathic Remedies The use of medicinal herbs, either alone or to augment
other treatments, can be a vital part of your pet's health regimen. Herbs
are especially useful for pets with chronic conditions requiring long term
therapy, and they have the added advantage of helping to restore and improve
internal organ function. Studying a
patient's lifestyle and diet at an early age can be used to counter their
specific tendencies toward imbalance. With knowledge of the patient's
specific tendencies, herbal medicines are utilized to prevent future illness by
providing causes of health. It is also a core belief of Chinese
medicine that appropriate lifestyle and diet are dictated by the patient's
environmental surroundings. The ability to create these ideal living
conditions with herbal therapies will not only prevent disorders, but also
resolve them.
Homeopathic medicine takes a profoundly different perspective on health and healing and is extremely individualized for each patient. The unique tenet of homeopathy is based on the principle of similars: when a substance causes symptoms at toxic levels, it can cure the same symptoms when prescribed in small doses. It is important to understand how homeopathy differs from other alternative forms of medicine; once a patient's symptoms are resolved, the homeopathic medicine is then discontinued.

Avian & Exotic Medicine | We provide outstanding care for your exotic companions including birds, reptiles, and "pocket pets". Although exotic pets are vaccinated infrequently, it is important to have them examined at least once a year for early detection of disease. If your exotic pet needs surgery, our CO2 laser allows us to perform these procedures not only carefully and quickly, but with minimal pain and recovery time. This includes, but is not limited to, spay/neuter and adrenal scent gland removal. Just a few of the other exotic pet services we offer include avian DNA sexing, wing/nail/beak trims, behavior and nutrition counseling, and specialized laboratory testing. | View |
